Di Founder's Letter
Di architecture of di unwritten.
I no grow up as writer. Na my spouse push me make I try am. So I do am — six weeks, on and off, and for di end I get one manuscript wey I proud of so tay I for fit run go moon barefoot. Eighty-four thousand words.
Then somebody wey close to me read am and tell me say e terrible. Literally. Na dat dem tell me for my very first novel.
“Terrible” na weapon. Na dat moment most people dey stop. I sabi how dat one dey feel. I live inside am for one while.
Years later I understand am: I don dey judge my first try against books wey pass through years of editors and revisions before any reader ever see dem — one impossible standard wey I no even know say e dey exist. Most people wey dem tell say dia first story terrible no dey ever write again. Dis house dey exist so dat dem go still write.
Why I build di rooms
I go back — forty years for sports make sure of dat — and I learn di craft for stolen hours: late nights when di children don sleep, lunch breaks, di in-between moments wey one single parent must fight for. Nobody teach me wetin I dey do wrong. No money dey for editors wey for change my work into something I no go even recognize again. So I build di thing wey I need and no fit find: one place wey dey teach instead of replace. Wey dey show you di standard instead of punish you with am. Wey dey protect your voice like say na di whole point — because na so e be.
Why I build one room for di ones wey serve
Then I think about di people wey dey carry di heaviest stories of all. Veterans don pass through things wey most of us go never understand — and every one of dem get story to tell. Most of dem nobody ever show dem how, and every way to tell am mean say dem go hand am to somebody first: one interviewer, one group, one stranger with recorder.
So I build dem one outlet to tell am exactly di way dem want tell am. One safe place, no judgment, where di story no dey ever edited into something wey e no be, and e no dey ever change into another person words. Dem talk — button dey for dat; no typing, no learning “AI.” Rye dey listen di way one good friend dey listen, e write am down for dia own words, and e read am back until every line dey say wetin dem mean. Tell Rye your rank, and dem go address you with di respect wey you earn. Nothing don finish until dem talk say e finish, and di story belong to dem alone — unless di day reach wey dem choose to share am.
Dem don live am. Dem don earn am. Now one place dey to tell am.
Every manuscript wey na mine dey pass through dis rooms — including di novel wey start dis story. I no fit offer you one house wey I no dey live inside.
